How exactly does stress affect your gut?
Your body does not easily manage stress and digesting food at the same time. Here are some ways that stress affects your ability to digest your food.

Digestive enzymes, what do they actually do? You may be surprised!
If we don’t have enough digestive enzymes, we won’t be able to digest and absorb all the beautiful healthy food we are eating (let alone some of the unhealthy stuff). What stops the body producing adequate digestive enzymes, and why are they so important?

Heartburn - not a lost love
What does a natural approach to heartburn entail? Are you taking medication and unsure what to eat/not to eat/how to heal your gut? We’ve got you.

To HRT or not to HRT. That is the question.
The decision to go on HRT is often made due to desperation and great discomfort. In this article we discuss the questions we ask our patients before making this decision, and some alternatives.

Stress and Menopause…triggering words both
When you enter menopause, the adrenal glands begin producing estrogen, partly taking over for the ovaries when they are becoming less efficient at this. Your adrenals are also responsible for your stress hormones of course: adrenalin and cortisol amongst others. Learn more here about the impact of stress on menopause and how to support yourself through this.

Cholesterol testing - but wait, there’s more!
One of the gold standards for assessing cardiovascular risk in this country is a cholesterol test. You’ve likely had one. You may have been offered medication (often statins) to bring your cholesterol down, without further testing of your cardiovascular system. It’s understandable - there is much evidence to support this as an immediate safety valve measure and mitigation of risk.
There is much more to cardiovascular system testing that you can do, and in our clinic, we do a thorough panel of tests so that we can get a much more full picture for you.

How are my hormones affecting my sleep again?
While hormones aren’t the only thing that affect sleep, they can be big players and understanding their role in your sleep cycle may just give you the “aha” moment you have been looking for. Here’s a summary of some of the hormones that are involved in your sleep/wake cycle and what they do:

PMS - let’s get real about this debilitating state
PMS affects a very large number of women, and is the main reason women come to see us for menstrual issues. Over 150 symptoms have been attributed to PMS. The mood changes that can occur pre-menstrually can be quite extreme and should be taken seriously. If you feel that you are out of control, angry, depressed or highly anxious, it is time to get some support for your hormones to improve this situation.

Gut testing: an insight into your insides
There’s not a single day that goes by in my clinic where I’m not talking with patients about their gut health. Whether they present with fatigue, mood challenges, skin issues, hormone imbalance, infections and or other common or rare health conditions, there is very often a link to their digestive system.
I always give them two options in the planning of their healthcare:

How’s your skin feeling?
I work with skin clinics all over the country advising them on nutrients to help their clients improve their skin health from the inside. It’s fascinating work and we have some great conversations about the balance between what goes on (the skin) and what goes in (the body), and how getting nutrients replenished and sustained at a good level really shows on your body. This is whether you have an underlying skin condition that you want resolved, or you just want to work on hydration, or healthy ageing. As a naturopath, it’s always a matter of looking at the whole picture for an individual rather than a blanket approach to all (usually doomed!).
