Think Zinc…
For some pretty important things!
At HEAL, we’re located in beautiful New Zealand, and despite our ability to grow amazing produce and have the opportunity to live healthy lives, there’s something lurking just below our green grass that should be of concern to us all (or rather, not lurking!).
We, like some other countries, have a deficiency of the mineral Zinc in our soils. It has been postulated that this is due to the volcanic nature of the history of our country, with much of this mineral being pushed out to sea. Whatever the reason, we don’t have enough of it, so today we’re going to look at why this should bother you, and what to do about it.
Zinc (Zn) is a trace mineral you may know for it’s inclusion in some sunscreens, or as a distant memory from science classes when learning the periodic table. Being a trace mineral, we only need a small amount of it, but it turns out that we’re generally not getting enough.
Why does this matter? Because zinc is critical to the following things in your body:
a healthy immune system (who doesn’t want one of those?)
a healthy gut
healthy skin
healthy hormones
healthy sperm (a very important mineral considering our declining fertility rates)
healthy cell growth
healthy protein building
to help heal damaged tissue (think of that sunscreen again)
for energy production (via the complicated but fascinating citric acid cycle)
So then the questions you should be asking (and we can answer for you) are:
How do I know if I need it?
How much should I take?
In what form?
How often?
For how long?
Can I get enough of it from my food (tricky in some countries actually, including here)
Get in touch with us to have a zinc assessment. As a start, you will definitely want to do this if you have:
Poor wound healing
Digestive problems
Weakened immunity
Hair loss
Changes in your nail health
Irritability that is unusual for you
eye problems
This is an easy fix, and we’d love to help you.
